Brazilian Embroidery is hand stitchery done predominantly with dimensional stitches using the Z-twisted rayon threads; with the original Fine Growth/Field Flowers encouraged.

Embroidery is a work of art and, as with any art, transforms its medium into a priceless heirloom, whether it's a pillow, garment, framed picture or accessory.  Renewed interest in the needle arts has motivated the students, teachers and designers of Brazilian Embroidery to create innovative stitch techniques.  These new techniques provide the opportunity to add dimension to the work.

Brazilian Embroidery was developed in the early 1960s by Mrs. Elisa Hirsch Maia.  Mme. Maia embroidered the household linen and clothing for her family.  Dissatisfied with available floss and colors, she developed a method of dying the native cellulose and produced the floss in many different colors.  She began teaching her stitches and selling her floss that eventually was sold around the world under the name, VariCor.  Her effort helped popularize the ancient bullion stitch.

Although the floss of Brazil is no longer available, rayon floss used for Brazilian Dimensional Embroidery is manufactured today in the United States and imported from New Zealand.  The origin of the rayon floss makes the embroidery Brazilian.  Dimensional stitches make it unique.  These dimensional stitches with their variations, plus the background greenery and field flowers, make it Brazilian Dimensional Embroidery.

I created the BDEIG site originally for the purpose of promoting the Brazilian Embroidery Guild. It was a board approved site. It was created for the good of the all members of the Brazilian Dimensional Embroidery Guild. This was to be a non-commercial site.  The executive board of the guild has voted that they no longer wish to have this sponsored site.  They have given me permission to continue with the site for my own purposes.  I've paid for the domain since it's inception and had pre-paid the fees for several years. Therefore I will continue to bring you Brazilian Embroidery Information. Sunshine
